I just got a "1780" Thaler

I just got this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...9971&rd=1&rd=1

From what I can find, the 1780 Thaler has been in continuous production since, well, 1780. As far as I can see, there's not any way to tell exactly what I got. The coin looks ok but could be in any condition and could have been made at any time in the last 227 years.
It's sorta funny how the seller equivocates when he says "This coin was minted I believe in australia in 1870."

I think it will make a good addition to the collection, minted 1780 or not.

Nice. I had been trying to keep an eye on these, but slacked off. APMEX had them in "Wholesale Foreign Silver" recently, but I don't see them today. I forget what they were asking for them. Looks like you got a good deal!

I had one before.....bought it for about $7 and sold it for $10.

They're neat to look at but not worth much. Research shows it's the most identifiable and common coin in the world since they made so many over the centuries.......yet most Americans are clueless about it.

Good deal Tom. I have thought about buying on for the purposes latemetal wrote about. I suspect, but I have never researched it, many Thalers have the year 1780 minted on them, so the true year is never quite known. I may be wrong, so do not quote me.

I think these are being minted by Austria currently, all with that date. Not sure where I read that. I too am going to pick one up soon for my humble collection.

I like the Maria Theresea's. You actually can determine the date, sometimes to a fair degree of accuracy, as they have used different dies over the years. There are subtle differences in things like the broach and other iconography.

Have at it!

if they have stayed the same for that long, how do you know when those coins are not a counterfeit printing?
